The land that makes up modern-day Canyons Village has seen many iterations and evolutions. What was once a farm debuted as Park City West in 1968, with its own ski runs, chairlifts and a distinct Wild West cowboy vibe. Over the years it grew and changed, going by Wolf Mountain before being renamed The Canyons. The standalone ski area was eventually merged with Park City Mountain Resort, its neighbor to the south.
Today, Canyons Village is one of the major base areas for Park City Mountain Resort, which is the largest ski area by lift access in the U.S. The Canyons Village base area was built with skiers in mind, which continues to make it a wonderful winter basecamp. It offers direct access to the ski area, plenty of ski rental shops and some of the area’s best eateries and bars (including a stellar aprés scene).
“Park City has some of the best accessibility to world-class mountain resorts, but when you live in Canyons Village, you’re really living on the mountain,” says CJ Larsen, the people manager at Pendry Park City. “It takes just minutes for me to walk from my front door to the chairlift. I never have to drive through heavy traffic during a snowstorm or worry about finding a parking spot.”
As someone who lives and works in Canyons Village, CJ says he’s right in the middle of the action — both at work and on his days off.
“My favorite thing about living and working here is being at the heart of the excitement! There is always something happening, and I am right next door. At work, I smile and laugh at people’s stories of their day on the mountain. On my days off, I sleep longer, knowing I don’t have to double my commute and struggle with parking.”
The winter sights and sounds of this little community to the north of Old Town are based around the day’s adventure — which is typically skiing and snowboarding.
“I love hearing the steps of heavy ski boots and swooshing of snow pants everywhere I go, and the smell of hot coffee, which warms the cool winter air,” says CJ. “When I walk through the streets of Canyons Village, no matter the time of day, endless cars drop off or pick up skiers and snowboarders.”
