This striking image of former professional ski jumper Abby Hughes (now Abby Ringquist) was captured by local photographer Dan Campbell in May 2010, at a moment when the women’s ski jumping team was fighting for its place on the Olympic stage. Shot high atop Hidden Peak at Snowbird, the photo became part of a powerful promotional campaign that helped raise awareness — and funds — for the athletes determined to make Olympic history.
Dan, who had been capturing photos for the U.S. Ski Jumping Team for years, organized the photoshoot in order to create prints that could be auctioned off at a fundraiser to support the athletes. Drawing inspiration from classic Austrian and Swiss ski posters of the 1940s and ’50s, he embraced a bold and colorful vintage theme.
Representing Park City’s powerhouse of talent at the time, the shoot featured U.S. Ski Jumping Team athletes Jessica Jerome, Lindsey Van, Alissa Johnson, Sarah Hendrickson and Abby. Lindsey, Sarah and Jessica went on to make history in 2014 as part of the first U.S. women’s ski jumping team competing in a Winter Olympics. Four years later, Sarah returned to compete again, joined by Abby, who made her Olympic debut in 2018.
Dan found a vintage ski clothing collector in Colorado, who shipped him the authentic outfits worn by the women, and sourced the vintage skis from a local shop. Hiring a hair and makeup artist t ocomplete the look, the athletes embraced the transformation.
“It’s really the girls that took on the whole concept,” Dan says. “I think that photo of Abby speaks volumes. I mean, she just grasped the period that we were going for and the look.
“For them, it was so out of their norm — it was a break from all the training and competitions. Just go out and have fun, create something unique,” he adds. “It was a great project to be a part of.”
A Park City resident for 35 years, Dan has spent more than three decades in his career as a commercial and lifestyle photographer, blending his lifelong passions for skiing, cycling and the outdoors with his work. In 2002, Dan was hired by NBC Sports to be its exclusive photographer for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
His travel assignments and work shooting adventure sports have taken him to far corners of the world, such as Morocco, Borneo, Patagonia and Bhutan.
Over the years, he’s worked with Park City’s ski resorts, professional athletes and the hospitality industry, showcasing the community’s vibrant mountain culture.
“For me, the real gift of photography has been interacting with so many other locals, athletes and the occasional celebrity. Everyone has such an interesting story,” Dan says.
